Julie M. Norman is a professor of political science at Concordia University in Montreal, and was a member of the Media Barrios team in the Jerusalem 2050 project. Julie's research focuses on popular resistance in Israel-Palestine, with an emphasis on nonviolent movements and media activism. She is currently publishing a book on civil resistance in the West Bank during the second intifada, and she is beginning a new research project on human rights and resistance in the Middle East. Her other research interests include media/arts advocacy, gendered violence, and youth and conflict. In addition to her research, Julie facilitates video and photography workshops with refugee youth in the West Bank with the Voice Beyond Walls project and the Lajee Center, and she has worked on several documentary films in the region. Julie has held fellowships with the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College, the Palestinian American Research Center (PARC), as well as the Jerusalem 2050 initiative at MIT. She has a PhD in international relations from American University in Washington, DC, with concentrations in human rights and peace and conflict resolution.
