This proposal seeks to bridge two different cultures and political entities by establishing a common “shared corridor” of land that will bridge the West bank with Gaza Strip via a high speed rail line that will enable shared economic and sustainable growth for a war torn region.
As this new two mile wide corridor will be shared, a new shared seat of government will be required and will be located east of Jerusalem’s old city. This new seat of government will be the theme for this new city which will be named “New East Jerusalem”. It will be the home for a shared seat of government, but will also house one hundred thousand Israeli and Palestinian inhabitants living together as a model for the region. As both political entities have interest in the “Old City” of Jerusalem, there will also be a light rail line connecting the Old City to “New East Jerusalem”.
The existing city limits of Jersualem will be extended to include “New East Jerusalem”. This new city will seek to embrace ecologically mindful building components and will essentially be a city built within a garden.
Primary circulation routes will allow inhabitants to travel to and from major areas via light rail within the city, but the primary mode of travel within the city limits will be pedestrian traffic. There will be little need for automobiles within the city’s limits. The center of the city will house a train station and outdoor market located under a massive tensile structure that will both offer shade and a sense of grandeur to the city’s inhabitants.
As peace in the region is achieved along the shared rail corridor, new satellite cities along the rail line will emerge and promote economic growth for both peoples long into the future.
