The project, New Golden Gate, is a little try under consideration to find how to bring physical surroundings up for an intangible issue. The idea is to answer the issue of peace, justice and security by providing links of urban textures as a concept line and landscape design with a psychological concept to treat group hysteria and trauma. Because the vision for Just and peaceful Jerusalem is not simply from making city secure and developed physically as we witness the new conflicts and fragmentation caused by separation wall and highways which are built for security and connecting. It might be impossible to make the ‘Just and peaceful Jerusalem’ by external change but inner changing. We merely could offer environments which may help people to experience the inner freedom. Here, being free from hurts of memories and history is a profound step for the change. There are two things that have to be done first: seeing hidden hurts before light and forgiving. And the journey to find an inner freedom has to be a life style, not an event.
“There is no peace without justice; there is no justice without forgiveness” -Pope John Paul II-
After research about Jerusalem, I found that inequalities and many problems are based on lack of social justice and tried to apply the journey for the inner freedom to an actual place, At-Tur. In this place, there will be three different layers of link, concept line and new use of abandoned land. Jews used to pray for mercy at golden gate, hence the name, Gate of Mercy. I hope the place may be a new golden gate as a sanctuary where people find peace in daily life.
